Enoria: an old fishermen’s village

Enoria is an old fishermen’s village. Greeks have a long history of shipping, and the fishermen lived in Enoria together with their families, higher up on the hill. From there, their wives could look out over the sea and watch for the boats returning home.

Platana is the summer village of Enoria. Almost every village in this part of Evia has one part of the village a little higher up in the mountains and another part closer to the sea: the winter village and the summer village. They always belong together, just as you can see across the bay with Stomio and Oxylithos.

In Enoria, you will find an impressive church. It is unusually large because the village was once quite wealthy, with many captains and seafaring families.

Today, many elderly residents remain while younger people have often moved to Kymi or Athens. The village is quieter now, but it has certainly not lost its charm.

Our recommendation: take a morning or evening stroll up to the church and the plateia. The view over Platana, the Aegean and the surrounding coastline is beautiful.

Platana’s restored beachfront

Platana recently received an EU subsidy to restore its beachfront, and the local people are absolutely ecstatic about the result. It is a special project because it actually happened as planned: no corruption, no major delay and no unfinished mess.

For many years, Platana did not really have a beach. Around twenty years ago, changes to the flow of the water and the protection of the village caused the old beach to disappear. The recent renovation has brought it back.

The water begins shallow, the beach is relatively protected from the wind, and the waterfront is a lovely place for an evening stroll.
