Groceries, medicine, fresh produce and prepared food.
Pharmacy in Platana
The family-run pharmacy has wide opening hours and extremely helpful owners. One of their children, Michalis, is around the age of Noah and Ian.
They can advise on medicine, sunscreen, insect bites and many other things. They also carry Apivita, our favourite Greek brand for natural shampoos, creams and skincare, plus sunglasses and holiday essentials.
Supermarkets
The small supermarket immediately after the bridge in Platana looks modest outside but has a surprisingly good selection. There is also a smaller corner shop.
Larger supermarkets are in Kymi, including one near Stoiras Kymis with a wide selection but somewhat higher prices. Another supermarket lies on the road towards Korasida.
Greek people often shop daily. We prefer to stock up the house at the start of the stay.
Lakis fruit and vegetable shop
Lakis and his wife run an excellent shop in Platana. He grows much of the produce himself on the family farm and supplements it with items from the Athens market.
They also make muesli bowls, smoothies, fruit snacks and other healthy treats—perfect before the beach.
Butcher in Platana
Do not be fooled by the nearly empty display. Most meat is stored in the cold room at the back. Ask for the animal or cut you want, and they will show you what is available.
The young son recently took over. The meat is good; for a very special steak, Stoiras Kymis in Kymi is still our favourite.
Favourite bakery in Kymi
This family bakery makes everything themselves. The woman prepares the sweets and cookies, while her husband makes the savoury items and fresh bread.
Look at the glass cabinet for spanakopita, cheese pie and cheese-filled flatbreads. They also have good ice cream and, sometimes, wonderful orange cake made with oranges from her own trees.
They have twin grandchildren and therefore have a special soft spot for Noel.
Stoiras Kymis
Stoiras Kymis is both an excellent butcher and a source of affordable home-cooked daily dishes made by the family. Portions are usually around €8–€9.
Collect them around lunch and eat immediately or refrigerate them for later. The most popular dishes are often gone by 13:00, although they can still grill steak, meatballs or other meat later.
